Mental note

Remember to sit down and have a discussion with myself. Do I really want to have this blog online or do I not?

I have lots to say but I am suffering writer’s block. And there’s no time. Joker.iki.fi is a very useful server for me for various reasons, but I am not sure whether the port 80 should be used like this. Blogs which receive no updates are sad and boring waste of internet pipe.

Quickie

A short summary why joker.iki.fi has been offline for quite some time now.

  • A new baby in the the house takes all of the free time
  • I got fed up with the problems the old web server had
  • I purchased a new server
  • Didn’t have time to configure it until today

What else? Nothing much. Lots of changes lately, mainly due to new baby. During bad days, I at times feel that I’m ready to shoot myself in the head because I just can’t take this anymore. During good days it’s ok though.

I have been worrying a lot about my mental and physical health lately. Combining a busy job and busy family life, while trying to stay in shape and to educate myself has turned out much more difficult than I thought. I still have some resources left but I have constantly a feeling that the batteries will just run out at some point.

Ok, enough ranting. I’m going to go to sleep now, otherwise I’m history.

Small outage again

Some networking equipment was changed and during that operation some of the upstream routing settings were incorrectly erased by my ISP. Joker.iki.fi was again out of connectivity over the weekend.

Now it should be working again. Let’s hope that’s the end of it.

Back in the ether

Joker.iki.fi was down for way too long. This was due to our ISP changing. Initially I thought that the change would cause just a small downtime due to IP address change, but it turned out that it was more difficult than that.

Nevertheless, the site is again up. There’s also more bandwidth. Next thing I am planning on doing is to upgrade the server since the current iron is getting too unstable to handle such an important site. =) No, really I do the upgrade because the server is going to be used for other things as web hosting, so I need some additional muscle there.

Anyway, when DNS is finally updated, you should be getting joker.iki.fi again, just as before.

Summer vacation

Hi,

Sorry again for the deadly silence in the blog. May and June were insanely busy so I didn’t really feel like blogging and didn’t really have time at the rare occasion that I felt like it.

But now, I have vacation all of July. Today we leave to a tour of Italy with my wife and I have high expectations from the trip. I have never been to Italy and the goal of this trip, apart from the obvious quality time and relaxation, is to see a bit of Italy.

I try to keep some sort of travel journal and do some blogging when we have internet coverage. I have a lot of gadgets, including cameras, laptop, GPS and my trusty old Nokia E70 with me so I guess I can do quite a bit. That’s the good thing when travelling with my wife. We actually stay sober and peaceful enough to do some intelligent and educating stuff as well. When travelling with friends, at least with most of them, there’s typically too much beer-drinking and stuff to actually sit down and do something that requires a focused thought.

Anyway, have fun you all and I hope that the server stays up and functional for the two weeks that we are abroad. I am not really worried about the server as such but our DSL connection has been quite unreliable for some reason in the last months. But alas, let’s hope that everything will be fine and ok, both in Italy and back home.

See you all.

Little server that could

Tadah! It’s my great pleasure and joy to announce that this little server box that runs this website has been up for

373 days (and counting!)

This is pretty impressive in my opinion if you consider that

  • It should have all the security patches installed
  • During this time, it has been retired from it’s duty to function as a SPI firewall
  • The floor of the room where it is physically located was renovated
  • It is not high-end server hardware but rather modest system build from used parts
  • I don’t have really that much time to maintain it.

Let’s see how far it gets. I am planning to rebuild it once I have the money (and most importantly) time to do that. But until then the only maintenance it is getting on the hardware site is a vacuuming on the room every once in a while.

Expect some downtime (updated)

I am doing some changes during this week to my home network. This probably means that joker.iki.fi will be not answering all the time. I try to keep the downtime minimal, but since I really don’t want to plan everything beforehand (come on, joker.iki.fi is probably not that business-critical!) you may get poor service.

Updated at 2/28/2007 14:25

I managed to do most of the updates which require downtime, so fear no more.

And by downtime, I mean disconnection from the Internet. The server uptime is still 346 days and the last reboot was a kernel upgrade. So joker.iki.fi has been running smoothly (as far as operating system goes) almost a year now. I think 365 is always a cause for celebration.

Getting rid of old stuff

Today my wife forced me to tidy up my study. I have managed to delay this activity for years now but today I kind of had to give up as she gave me no options. I threw out two large bags of old printouts and a LOT of old papers and binders. Most of the stuff dated back to years 97-99 when I did most of my lab courses at the univerity. Lots of good memories there and a lot of information and work that went into producing those papers. I felt kind of sad throwing them away.

I had a lot of old Linux HOWTOs and magazines and whatnot, stuff that’s so deprecated nowadays and they are just a click away in the internet that makes no sense to keep those, but still I felt bad of discarding the stuff. The most memorable items were some of the old computer games and burned CD’s with faded out texts like “Red Hat 5.2″ or something like. It made me feel very nostalgic but at the same time the practical side of me was telling me that it just makes no sense in storing stuff that I’m never going to need again.
Well, now it’s done and I also did some housekeeping to my server. The old copy of joker.iki.fi has been running in the background for a few months now but the Drupal that it was running was so full of holes that I needed to archive the old version of joker.iki.fi. So, a lot of changes today here in my world. A spring cleaning even before spring.

During the time sun was setting I took a little cycling trip, a bit more than one hour and I have to admit that even though I don’t really like winter, it was actually very pretty outside.

A nice day in general.

About Wordpress

Now I’ve been using the new blog for a while and I have to say that I really, really like WordPress.

With the old joker.iki.fi I had to constantly worry about comment spam and all sort of mishaps. It might be that the new system has been online for such a short period of time that I havent been spotted by as many spambots, but still WordPress does what it promises very well.

I am going to remove that last drupal binaries from the server quite soon and as a blogging software, I don’t think I’m going to be looking back. Not that Drupal is bad. It’s a full CMS and does a ton of tricks that WordPress does not do, but as a blogging platform, I think I have found my own.

My next projects will include setting up a easy-to-maintain photo gallery. Let’s see how WordPress can help…

New blog internals, new era for joker.iki.fi

Hello, you all who still are interested! Joker.iki.fi has been awfully silent lately. This is because other projects take quite a bit of my time and there’s busy times at work. The time I have for joker.iki.fi has mostly gone to the installing and trying out new content management software, Wordpress. Today, I decided to do the change. Hopefully you all have updated the RSS and ATOM feeds as the old site, located in http://joker.iki.fi/cms/ will cease to exist after next critical security bug is identified in the version of Drupal I’m using there.

Some of you may wonder why I changed from Drupal to Wordpress. There’s no one reason really for doing such a thing but multiple pros and cons for both CMSs. Most important, and completely subjective things are:

  • Wordpress seems to be dealing with comment spam better than Drupal. I have had many problems with Drupal comments beign spammed to death and it just seems that Wordpress destroys spam more efficently and has better captcha support than Drupal
  • I like Wordpress editor and image support better than that of Drupal’s
  • Wordpress seems a bit easier to upgrade to new versions than Drupal
  • Documentation of Wordpress seems better.
  • I just needed a change

All of these things are my own subjective points of view - I don’t want to start a flamewar. Drupal is good but it’s just time that I try something else.

Ok. Now that that is clear, let me just say a few words about joker.iki.fi in general. Somewhere during the spring I plan to upgrade the joker.iki.fi server and I also have at least one free software project I’m working on that will be hosted (partly) from joker.iki.fi. So that’s something new.

Also, I have a lot of blogging to do and a lot of ideas that I want to do with the blog, so please bear with me. The main focus of the blog will still be my life, technology, music, ranting, sports, arts and so on.

So again, stay tuned. And I hope you like the theme. I am a big fan of simplistic web pages and joker.iki.fi theme reflects this, as you can see.
